ABOUT BIRCH LANDSCAPES

Birch Landscapes is a residential landscape design studio serving the greater Portland, Maine area. We specialize in creating refined outdoor spaces that feel connected to the architecture of the home and the natural character of the property.

Our work is guided by a simple belief: a landscape should not overpower a home. It should frame it, soften it, and connect it gracefully to the land around it.

Rather than relying on excessive color or overplanting, we focus on structure, repetition, texture, and space. Evergreen forms, ornamental grasses, broad lawn panels, natural stone, and carefully selected flowering accents create landscapes that feel calm, mature, and quietly luxurious.

Each project begins with careful observation. We consider the architecture, existing trees, circulation, views, privacy, light, and the way the property is experienced from season to season. From there, we develop a design that feels intentional, functional, and timeless.

OUR FOUNDER

Nearly 25 years ago, Ed Whiting, founder and designer, enrolled in landscape design classes at the New York Botanical Garden, following an interest that was always at heart. After years in other fields, Ed has returned to a place that he loves—the outdoors. He’s thrilled to have come full circle, designing outdoor spaces here in Maine.
